Lost Jazz Shrines 2004
The Village Gate Part I
On the corner of Bleecker and Thompson, impresario Art D'Lugoff integrated his club with the sounds of Latin music "pairing the finest salsa orchestras with the finest Jazz musicians, it let them find common ground. The common ground often shook and the shows worked from week to week." - New York Times
In three unique concerts, Tribeca Performing Arts Centerwill take you back to Monday nights when, for twenty years, you might have had the rare opportunity to witness Dizzy Gillespie playing with Tito Puente and his Orchestra.
Pre-show panels bring together historians, jazz scholars, former club owners, and musicians.Film excerpts by noted jazz film historian Michael Chertok prompted Daniel Henniger of the Wall Street Journal to exclaim, "worth the trip alone."
